UPASICON-2005 HELD AT ALIGARH: MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERIES PERFORMED LIVE

    Aligarh, 13 November: A three-day convention of surgeons affiliated to Association of Surgeons of India (UP. Chapter) was inaugurated here at J.N. Medical College by Mr. Naseem Ahmad, lAS, the Vice-Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University.

"Knowledge is synergy of thoughts …. And now it is a matter of satisfaction for all of us that the state of art techniques, robot assisted and minimally invasive surgeries and tele­medicine have been made available in our own country", said Mr. Naseem Ahmad while inaugurating the UPASICON-2005.

Department of Surgery hosted the 31st Annual Conference of the UP Chapter this year, billed as UP ASICON-200S attended by a number of expert surgeons and senior faculty from all over India as delegates and key speakers.

The morning sessions of the first day were earmarked for special orations like Dr. S.C. Misra Memorial Oration (Dr. A K. Khanna, Varanasi) and Dr. S.N. Mathur Memorial Oration (Dr. Sudhir Pandey, Lucknow) followed by two guest lectures by Dr. D.P.S. Toor (Delhi) and Dr. M.H. Beg (Aligarh).

Eight Scientific Sessions ran parallel at surgery seminar room and committee room where free papers (seven each) were presented by the delegates from various parts of India. Similar sessions continued in the afternoon also followed by annual general meeting of the Association. A colorful cultural programme on the last day enthralled the delegates and other eminent invitees.

For the delegates, a scientific poster presentation was also organized where presenters explained various aspects of their research works and analyses in the broader discipline of surgery for the advancement of learning in the subject.

On this occasion, the UPASICON-2005 souvenir volume and the ASI Journal ‘SURGERY’ were also released by the Vice-Chancellor. Office Bearers of UP Chapter of ASI namely Dr. V.S. Rajput (President) and Dr. Rajan Luthra (Secretary) along with Chairman Organizing Committee Prof. M.H. Beg, Dean Faculty of Medicine Prof. Usha Singhal, Organizing Secretary Prof. M. Amanullah Khan and other dignitaries were present. Various speakers lauded the front-ranking role being played by J N Medical College in recent days and as a token of the same this medical college was chosen by the apex body of the surgeons in India to bring out their prestigious journal from here

An audio-visual quiz competition amongst hospital residents and medicos was held on the second day of the UPASICON. Professor (Dr.) M. Amanullah Khan acted as the organizing secretary of this conference. Conference secretariat was set up in the department of surgery at JN Medical College, AMU, Aligarh.

According to the chairman of the PR Cell of UPASICON-2005, Dr M. Aslam, a close circuit TV assisted live workshop of conventional surgery and other operative procedures including the state-of-the–art minimally invasive endoscopic and laparoscopic surgeries conducted at the convention were the unique feature of this convention.

As a salient feature of the closing day of this convention, entire procedures involving surgeries performed on patients for removal of stones [calculi] from gall bladder, correction of hernia, appendix removal, Nissen fundoplication, Hydatid cyst removal of liver, removal of stones from ureters and kidney, and exploration of common bile duct were performed live by eminent surgeons of JN medical College, Dr MH Raza, Dr Afzal Anees, Dr SAA Rizvi and Dr SH Harris.

A number of delegates from various medical colleges and hospitals of India participated in the deliberations at the conference. Invited faculty to run live workshops for state-of-the-art operative procedures on conventional and minimally invasive surgeries included Dr Pradeep Chaubey [Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi], Dr SD Maurya [SNMC, Agra], Dr Yogesh Agarwal [Fortis Hospital, NOIDA], and Dr Ramen Goel [Bombay Hospital, Bombay]

In all, six guest lectures, two symposia, eight scientific sessions and four prestigious named orations were held under the aegis of the UP Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India [UPASI] organized during the three days of this convention.
