History of JN Medical College ; a Cursory Glance

 

    Sir Dr. Ziauddin, the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University had visualized the need of a medical college in the university. And to make his dream true he had put a lot of pains in this direction. With the help of his colleagues and students, Dr. Ziauddin could be able to raise good amount of funds for the purpose.

 

But more than a decade after his death his dream has come true.

 

1949-50: Institute of Ophthalmology was started in collaboration with Dr. Mohan Lal, the founder of Gandhi Eye Hospital.

 

             1962     : Medical College started by Prof. Hadi Hasan.

                                                                                       

                                :    Department of Anatomy came into existence.

 

1964   :Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Medicine & Surgery were established.

 

1965       : The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dr.Yusuf Hussain Khan, laid the foundation stone of the Medical College building.

 

1968       : The Medical Council of India refused to recognize the MBBS degree of the college.

 

1969       : Recognition granted by the Medical Council of India to Aligarh Muslim University for award of MBBS degree.

 

: Hospital building commissioned. And a high level committee, under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Education was held and resolved that the fund be provided through UGC to run the hospital.

 

: The constitution of the Hospital Management Board, under the Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor was formed.

                 

: A team of the Inspectors of Medical Council of India inspected and found fit to start Post Graduation classes in different disciplines. Students were admitted for M.D., M.S. and Diploma courses in different departments.

                 

: The Department of Surgery shifted in the new building of Medical College along with the College & the Hospital.

 

1971          : The Medical Council of India (MCI) permitted to start M.S. course in Surgery.

 

                1973       : First batch of M.S. students was examined.

 

1979          : Postgraduate degree in Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology were recognized.

 

1980       :  Department of Oto-Rhinolaryngology (ENT) was established.

 

1981       : The Unit of Anaesthesiology was given full status of a Department.   

 

1990       : M.Ch. course in Plastic Surgery was started.
