Classification Scheme & Arrangement of Collections

Books:

The Faculty Library has an Open Access Library system. Books are arranged on the shelves according to their subjects, based on Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) scheme of classification.

“Call number,” is given through the DDC, which also appears on the catalogue cards and on the spine of every book.

The first main number denotes the class of the book whereas the second line known as book number, which consist of alphabets represents “author & the title”. An example is given below.

616

H 36 PR

Here 616 is the class number and letter H stands for the name of author Harrison though PR represents the title of the book.

Periodicals:

Periodicals, back volumes are located in the old reading hall of the library. These are alphabetically arranged on the shelves.

The current periodicals have been kept on the journals’ display shelves in the new building. The arrangements of these journals are also made alphabetical.

 Cataloguing:

The Faculty library being an ancillary of the Maulana Azad Library, the University library opts Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (AACR).

A complete ‘Author Catalogue’ (Alphabetically arranged), enables readers finding the library books and theses.

And a complete ‘Title Catalogue’ (Alphabetically Arranged), is also available to help the users.
